The 57 Biennale di Venezia was named VIVA ARTE VIVA.
Nine diferent clans of artistic familes. 120 guest artists, of whom 103 are participating for the first time. 86 Pavillions of participating countrys including Antigua y Barbuda , Kiribati and Nigeria.
Each Friday and Saturday , for six months, the artists will host an open table, informal lunches to meet the visitors and be able to keep with them lively talks about their work. In the central pavillion at the Giardini and in the Sale d´Armi at the Arsenale a space will also be created for the Artist´s Practices Projet, including a series of short videos made by the artist about themselves and their way of working.
They also designed the project titled Unpaking My Library, inspired by Walter Benjamin´s essay published in 1931, where they compile their favourite books. One way, they say, to know better, a source of inspiration for the public. In addition, a dense program of about twenty performances will take place during the week opening.
Paolo Barata, the president of the Biennale, explains that the Biennal is Dedicated to CELEBRATING, and of course, TO GIVING THAKS for the existence of ART and ARTIST whose worlds expand our perspectives and the space of our existence.
For Christine Macel, the Biennal´s curator, the exhibition is inspired by HUMANISM, but by the humanism that, through art, celebrated mankind´s ability to avoid being dominated by the powers governing world affairs. And act of resistence, of liberation and of generosity.
The curator has stated:
Today, in a world full of conflicts and shocks, art bears witness to the most precious part of what makes us human. ART is the ultimate ground for reflection, individual expression, freedom and for fundamental questions. Art is the last bastion, a garden to cultivate above and beyond trends and personal interests. It stands as an unequivocal alternative to individualism and indifference”.
The role, the voice and responsibility of the artist are more crucial than ever before within the framework of contemporary debates. It is in and through these individual initiatives that the world of tomorrow takes shape, which though surely uncertain, is often best intuited by artists than others.
Viva Arte Viva is an exclamation, a passionate outcry for ART and for the state of the ARTIST. Viva Arte Viva is a biennial designed with artists, by artists and for artists
